Geography

The aim of Geography teaching at Episkopi Primary is to ensure that children are equipped with the skills to make sense of the world and its people, places and environments through explanatory relationships. Children will gain an understanding of the world around them, its environments, places near and far, and the processes that create and affect them. Pupils’ geographical education begins in the Early Years and builds year on year, developing pupils’ expertise, knowledge and skills.

Through our Geography teaching, our pupils are equipped to embody our values in learning by helping pupils to understand their world, their role in it and the responsibilities that come with it.  Pupils show a sense of responsibility for others and the world when taught about the Geographical concept of place knowledge effectively.  Understanding ones’ locational knowledge helps to build a child’s identity, which links to our core value of reflectiveness. The value of resourcefulness is fostered through an ability to learn and apply geographical skills and fieldwork progressively and in a range of contexts.

Across all year groups, there is a focus on understanding the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time. It is crucial that children have an understanding of environmental impact, sustainable development, cultural awareness and cultural diversity, through engaging and effective teaching which also makes the most of opportunities in the local environment. Reflection and a sense of personal and collective responsibility are key values which are an important thread throughout the whole of the Geography curriculum.
